The Zero Vision Campaign/ Policy
Zero Vision is an initiative launched by Mayor Eric Garcetti in 2016 that strives to end traffic fatalities in the city of Los Angeles. The citywide effort connects citizens, policeman, transportation engineers, policymakers, and advocates in order to find solutions to lower the city’s fatality rates. More than 200 people are killed by cars annually in Los Angeles. Surprisingly, about half of these people were killed when they were walking or biking. The campaign hopes to end all serious injuries and deaths caused by traffic accidents.
Research conducted by Zero Vision Campaign under covered that traffic collisions are the number one causes of death for children in Los Angeles. They focus on keeping the most vulnerable members of society safe including children, the elderly, and people biking or walking. Although the initiative was developed last year, they have made strides to begin lowering the statistics.Work has been done to identify areas with the highest projected and statistically proven traffic collisions. The High Injury Network has made strategic investments.
Mayor Eric Garcetti expected a 20 percent drop in traffic fatalities upon launching the Zero Vision Campaign.
Rise of Car Accidents In Los Angeles
Los Angeles County has the highest amount of fatal car crashes in Southern California. Despite all of Mayor Garcetti’s Zero Vision Campaign, car fatality rates have remained consistent, if not increased throughout the last year. In 2016, 40,200 people in Los Angeles were killed in car accidents that took place on city streets.
This sharp rise resulted a 43 percent increase from car accident deaths from the year before. In April of this year car accidents were already 22 percent than they were during the same time last year.
According to a study of federal of crash data, when a person’s struck by a car going 20 miles per hour, a pedestrian has a 10 percent chance of dying. This chance increases to 80 percent if the vehicle is going 40 miles per hour.
