Sylmar, CA – Child Critically Hurt, DUI Suspected in Two-Car Wreck on 5 Fwy
Sylmar, CA (August 11, 2023) – A 2-year-old child was critically injured in a car accident on the 5 Freeway in Sylmar on Friday, and the driver involved is being held on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident happened around midnight on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway, right before the 14 Freeway intersection.
A CHP representative confirmed that responding officers were told the incident included two vehicles and a probable ejection. Two people, presumed to be the child’s parents, and their toddler, were riding in the first car.
The child was left in severe condition and transferred to the nearest hospital. A representative for the investigation stated they were looking into whether or not the 2-year-old was ejected during the collision.
The second motorist was not hurt in the wreck, but police say they detained that person on suspicion of DUI. After the accident, four lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were restricted, but they are now open again.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families.
