Santa Monica to Install Pedestrian Scrambles to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents
In an effort to reduce the rising number of pedestrian accidents, a dozen crosswalks in Santa Monica are about to get a new look.
The first of the pedestrian scramble crosswalks have already gone in at busy intersections in downtown Santa Monica. These brightly painted crosswalks allow pedestrians to safely walk on foot in any direction across the intersection at once.
The new crosswalks are part of the city’s “strategic goal to create a new model of mobility” by encouraging people to walk and bike rather than driving. The artistic pedestrian-friendly crosswalks also improve visibility to hopefully reduce accidents.
Pedestrian scrambles are a type of traffic control that is designed to improve safety while pedestrians cross the street. These scrambles simultaneously stop traffic in all directions until everyone is done crossing. With cars stopping in every direction, fewer people should be hit in intersections in the city. Allowing diagonal crossing also means drivers will not need to wait for pedestrians to cross the street to make turns to potentially reduce traffic congestion as well.
The scrambles are being installed in areas of downtown Santa Monica with high pedestrian volume, including Santa Monica & 4th, Broadway & 4th, and Arizona & 4th.
Los Angeles has a few pedestrian scrambles, although several of the ten originally installed by then-mayor Villaraigosa in 2008 have since been removed. Some of the pedestrian scrambles in Los Angeles have worked out well, but others did not. Part of the problem is it can take time for drivers and pedestrians to understand how the pedestrian-friendly crosswalks work and how to use them properly.
If the pedestrian scrambles in Santa Monica show positive results, it will hopefully encourage the installation of more scrambles in Los Angeles. California currently leads the nation in pedestrian fatalities. Los Angeles has the dubious honor of being the second-best place for pedestrians to be killed after New York City.
