Santa Clarita, CA – Toddler Killed in DUI Accident on I-5 at Balboa Blvd
Santa Clarita, CA (August 17, 2023) – The Santa Clarita-area collision that investigators say was caused by a Stevenson Ranch resident who was drunk resulted in the death of a 2-year-old boy on Wednesday.
At around midnight last Friday, Officer Josh Greengard, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office, stated that first responders received reports of a traffic crash on the northbound 5 Freeway, south of Balboa Boulevard, in which a 2-year-old child was reported to be unconscious and not breathing.
Greengard said that the 2-year-old was severely injured, sent to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and later died on Wednesday.
Greengard claimed that a Ford Focus driven by a 31-year-old Stevenson Ranch man was following a Ford Expedition in which the child was a passenger.
The man was driving too fast for the conditions, and he crashed into the back of the Ford, causing it to spin out of control and slam into a concrete pillar under Balboa Boulevard on the right shoulder.
The man was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department on suspicion of DUI. An investigation is ongoing, and the CHP will update its DA report to include the child’s death.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the deceased child’s family.
