Hit and Run Accidents in California
In the state of California, like most others, you are legally required to remain at the scene of an accident in which you have been involved until law enforcement arrives. You are also required to show identification to the other people involved and provide a reasonable level of help, such as calling for the paramedics, to anyone who is injured. Once you have chosen to leave the scene of the accident, even if you were not the driver at fault, you are now facing criminal charges in addition to everything else. In California, hit and run accidents can be charged as either misdemeanors or felonies. Incidents involving property damage under a certain dollar amount are usually charged as a misdemeanor. Incidents that lead to injury and/or death, however, will most likely be charged as felonies. These charges will remain with the driver for the rest of their life.
