Newborn Dies After Pregnant Mother Struck by a Drunk Driver
A tragic car accident has left a newborn baby dead just minutes after her birth following a head-on collision near Valley Glenn late last month.
Judith Mauricio, who was eight months pregnant, was traveling along Fulton Avenue in a 1997 Acura Integra when she was struck by another vehicle being driven by Julian Gutierrez. Witnesses reported that Gutierrez, who was driving a 2010 Nissan Altima, crossed the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and struck Mauricio’s vehicle. Judith suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital where she gave birth to her daughter, who had been scheduled for birth several weeks away.
The baby girl was born alive but could not be saved and died after just a few minutes of life.
One witness reported seeing dark bruises on Mauricio’s stomach as she was extricated from the accident.
Gutierrez suffered only minor injuries in the accident and was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving under the influence after he received treatment. He had previously been convicted of misdemeanor DUI in 2016, 2015, and 2014. His license had been suspended 7 times in the last 6 years and was revoked in 2016 after he was sentenced to six months in jail for his most recent DUI, NBC reported.
Gutierrez has been charged with felony murder, felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony driving under the influence causing injury within 10 years of two other DUI offenses, and felony driving with a 0.08 BAC causing injury within 10 years of two other DUI offenses.
