Minkler, CA – Three Killed in Accident on Highway 180
Minkler, CA (August 7, 2018) – A tragic accident on Sunday in Fresno County left three people dead. 66 year old Kenneth Hockersmith was driving a Jeep in the westbound lanes of Highway 180 around 1:00 pm. Hockersmith approached an intersection with a stop sign. As he approached the intersection, a 2000 Toyota driven by 18 year old Clara Lemus moved forward into the intersection.
Lemus’s Toyota struck the driver’s side door of the Jeep. The Jeep rolled over from the impact of the collision. Hockersmith was critically injured in the crash. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. His passengers, Don Hockersmith and Ronald Hockersmith are in the hospital with moderate injuries. Lemus and two ot her passengers in her vehicle were unhurt.
This crash remains under investigation with the California Highway Patrol. There is no additional information at this time.

It remains unclear exactly what happened in this crash. From details, it appears as though Lemus may have entered the intersection unsafely in that she failed to see that traffic in both directions was clear before proceeding from the stop sign. More investigation is necessary to determine the cause of the crash.
Officers at the scene will look at a number of things, including vehicle placement, skid marks, and witness statements. The results of their investigation will assist in determining liability for this accident. At this time, it is still premature to speculate on what might have happened.
