Meyers, CA – Tanker Driver Killed in Explosion on US 50
Meyers, CA (September 10, 2019) – The driver of a tanker truck carrying petroleum was killed in a collision on Saturday, September 7th on US 50 near Meyers, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of a four-door sedan that collided with the truck while attempting to merge sustained major injuries.
Both the tanker truck driver and the automobile driver were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital.
The accident took place shortly before noon and US 50 remained closed in both directions until about 8:00 a.m., next morning.
Both vehicles were driving eastbound when the car hit the tanker while changing lanes near Elks Club Drive. The tanker rolled over, which caused it to explode.
Hazmat crews responded to the scene as the big rig was carrying a very large amount of petroleum that was rapidly spilling into the Truckee River.
