La Verne, CA – 2 Dead & 3 Injured in Crash After Driver Attempts to Elude Police
La Verne, CA (August 31, 2019) – Two drivers were killed Thursday night, August 30th, when a car that was attempting to elude a La Verne Police Officer collided with another vehicle, resulting in the hospitalization of three passengers. All were listed in critical condition.
The events that ultimately led to the fatal accident started shortly before 9:00 at night. Officers from the LVPD were endeavoring to pull over a red Acura Integra for blowing through a stop sign in the vicinity of East Arrow Highway and N White Avenue.
The driver of the Acura, however, opted to flee from the officers instead. The driver was then observed running an additional stoplight as he vigorously maintained his efforts to dodge the local authorities.
The chase lasted for approximately 20 more seconds before the Acura careened directly into a black Toyota Corolla near the corner of College Lane and N White Avenue.
The driver and both passengers in the Acura, as well as the driver and single passenger from the Corolla, were all transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency medical treatment.
According to a statement issued by the police, the drivers of both cars were pronounced dead on arrival once they reached the hospital. All three passengers were listed in critical condition.
Police also confirmed that the Acura was traveling at a speed in excess of the posted limit when it collided with the victims in the Toyota.
The driver of the Toyota, Marlet Reyes, a 68-year-old resident of La Verne was just a few yards away from her house when the accident occurred. Reyes’ niece, Lizzeth Jacobo, said Reyes was on her way to do some shopping at Target. She was with her good friend, a 64-year-old female whose identity has not yet been released. This woman was also critically injured during the crash, suffering a punctured lung, a broken pelvis, and a broken neck.
Reyes was still alive when she got to the hospital. She was intended to undergo a surgical procedure but sadly, went into cardiac arrest.
The identity of the Acura driver and his two passengers have not been released.
It is still unknown why the driver of the Acura elected to flee from the police.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Mrs. Marlet Reyes, at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Car Accidents in La Verne
The U.S. Department of Transportation has published data which asserts that roughly 2.5 million drivers and passengers throughout the United States sustain injuries of one kind or another stemming from their involvement in a car accident. The aftereffect of these injuries for about 36,000 of those car accident victims is death.
The really upsetting thing about all of this is that a considerable chunk of these vehicle collisions that have led to so much injury and so much death could have been avoided entirely seeing as how they were the direct result of negligence on the part of the driver.
If you or someone you love has been injured as the result of a car accident in which you were not the negligent driver, then California law allows for you to receive financial compensation for any damages that the other driver’s carelessness has cost you.
The car accident attorneys at the Los Angeles Injury Group have spent decades assisting victims of California car accidents in recovering the financial losses that they have endured and are entitled to collect according to the law.
