Highway Accidents in California
According to a five-year research study that concluded in 2015, the state of California is home to one of the most dangerous highways in the country, Highway 99. This notorious highway runs through Central Valley and boasts an alarming 62.3 fatal accidents for every 100-mile segment. California alone saw 3,623 fatal highway accidents in 2016. The top three counties for these fatalities were Los Angeles (with more fatalities than the next two counties combined),, Riverside, and San Bernardino.
Highway collisions are often far more dangerous than their rural road counterparts due to the high speeds at which vehicles are traveling. You also have a higher number of people who may have been on the road for a very long time and are suffering from fatigue, making them less aware of their surroundings and decreasing their reaction times. Distracted driving is another big issue on California roadways and a highway packed full of people is no exception to this.
